Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment

When trauma, chips, cracks or decay cause tooth infection or inflammation that extends to the nerve of the tooth, root canal therapy is needed to save the tooth. Natural teeth are saved by root canal treatment preventing the need for extraction.

Our dentists at Moonstone Dental Centre Oakville always prefer a treatment that ensures preserving natural teeth. Root canal treatment is preferred over extracting a tooth to preserve your natural smile, help you enjoy eating the food you like and protect your other teeth from strain and excessive wear.

Some of the signs and symptoms associated with a root canal inflammation are: sensitivity to hot and cold; severe pain when pressure is applied on the tooth; dull pain in the jaw; swelling and/or tenderness on the gums. And sometimes, no symptoms are present.

There is a common misconception that the root canal treatment is painful. In fact, it is not. The procedure is not only painless, it actually help relieve the pain symptoms caused by the root’s soft tissue inflammation. It’s just like having a filling.

There is a common misconception that the root canal treatment is painful. In fact, it is not. The procedure is not only painless, it actually help relieve the pain symptoms caused by the root’s soft tissue inflammation. It’s just like having a filling.

We at Moonstone Dental Centre Oakville, understand the pain and discomfort a root canal infection might cause and we always welcome new root canal patients and emergency root canal patients to relieve their pain as fast and efficient as possible.

Root Canal treatment requires one or two appointments to be completed depending on your case. The procedure involves removing the infected, damaged or non-living pulp tissue from the root canal.

It starts by numbing the area with local anaesthesia, isolate the tooth with a rubber dam, then a tiny whole is made to disinfect the canal and remove any damaged tissue. Finally when the canals are cleaned, they are filled and sealed. Normally it is advisable to place a dental crown on the treated tooth to strengthen it and prevent future cracks or fractures of the tooth.

Recovery is usually minimal after a root canal treatment and you can return to your daily routine almost immediately after the procedure. Although you might experience some sensitivity in the tooth and some soreness in the gum after the treatment, but it will subside in a day or two. Detailed care instructions will be given to you by your dentist after each appointment.
